The family frequently moved because of her father's position as a diplomat. This meant that they were scattered across the world across countries like Germany, Japan, and Greece. After moving to Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In the fall of 1980, she entered the University of Texas at Austin. She received a bachelor's degree in the field of theatre that year. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts 1988 in order to earn her MFA.
