JoyceDeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. DeWitt graduated from Ball State University with a Bachelor's of Arts. In the following year, as she was performing in summer stock and was urged by the director to attend UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt claimed she did not meet the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary during her time at UCLA. Dewitt's portrayal of Janet Wood in Three's Company's 1977-84 series is among her most well-known. She was part of the show's pilot and was offered the role. DeWitt also appeared as Janet in a 1979 episode of the spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt was the final actor to appear in the show's 1984 finale. She also appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. After that she ceased acting for a number of years. In June 1991 she came back to acting with an important role in Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse. Also, she was a part of Spring Fling, which was a 1995 TV comedy. Pinky and the Brain aired in 1997 and featured characters based on her. The character was voiced partly by another actress. She appeared in an episode Cybill and made a brief appearance in Living Single's final episode. She's been on shows on TV such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special, and Call of the Wild in 2000.
